Yup, it's a slow news day folks since most of the big games have already released this year and the VGAs aren't until next month.

Spike TV has sort of become the one mainstream video game award show people pay attention to, I don't know if it is because it is of the "World Premieres" that air during the show or the awful presenters that try to hard.
Either way, if you want YOUR favorite game to win Game of the Year or Best Shooter, etc, then you can head over to the VGA 2011 page and start voting!

Splash Damage and Bethesda have teamed up to create a multiplayer title which can seamlessly transform into Singleplayer and vise versa. Brink takes place on an arc which serves as one of the last resorts on the planet; it was designed to hold several thousand occupants but was overwhelmed with massive crowds seeking refuge. Naturally a setup like that can lead to some unrest. The arc is in chaos and security forces are in constant battle with the uprising rebel group.

Players will control either the security or rebel factions and need to complete objectives which are specialized to each class. Examples of this are the spy who has to hack security panels or deliver pass codes and the medic who in turn is in charge of healing and escorting a person of interest. Each player and each class in this dynamic multiplayer game has to do their part in order to achieve their objectives and ultimately the main objective to win the mission.
Playing Brink is a satisfying experience as the game has good shooting controls, smooth movements and intuitive objectives. Brink also utilizes a new movement system called SMART which stands for ‘Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain’. SMART allows players to navigate the environments smoothly with the ease of holding down the right trigger on the PS3 or 360 controller. The character will slide under and over obstacles as those come up during gameplay. The system worked well in the build I played and felt very natural. Think Mirrors Edge. The gunplay itself was a mix between your standard COD and Killzone-esque controls.

As I said before, players will complete different objectives based on their class and what is needed in order to move ahead in the mission. Players can switch their class with the push of a button. I played both as the spy and the medic. Character models will remain the same, I was using the skinny body style which moves faster and has less armor. The heavy types are reversed. There is tons of customization in Brink. Players will be able to uniquely change their character’s body style, clothing, tattoos, hair and the weapons they use.
The unique thing about Brink is the way the story mode works. Each player can jump into a Singleplayer game and play it all the way through against Bot AI but at the same time can go Multiplayer. There is no distinction between either game mode and if you choose to switch to Multiplayer other ‘real life’ players will join your game while progressing in their own ‘Singleplayer’ campaign. This seamless switch between game modes makes Brink a very interesting and unique experience, it also has solid controls and a fluid movement system which makes Brink one of my more anticipated titles.
Brink is set to release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in May.

East Coast gamers often get the short end of the stick when it comes to video game conventions or any type of industry events in general. Last year the guys from Penny Arcade hosted the first PAX in Boston, MA. The success of the event was so overwhelming that they decided to hold the event every year and move it to a bigger venue.
Upon my arrival in Boston I couldn't wait to hit the show floor and mingle with developers and gamers alike. PAX is an incredibly interesting event since industry, press and gamers alike blur the lines and celebrate video games.
I will dive into some deeper preview coverage next week but wanted to summarize my first day here in Boston by talking about a few of those games.
The first title I went hands on with was 'Shoot many Robots' which is a classic sidescrolling multiplayer shooter where players can use different loadouts and battle all kinds of enemy robots. The world has gone to hell in the universe of Shoot many Robots and a 'robot factory' is producing several, increasingly difficult, robotic creations which will try to destroy you. Once I chose my loadout, I went into a 4 player coop game where we went up against several of those enemy types and ultimately defeated a massive boss, which shot out oil and ignited it with his flaming breath. The developers were a bit cagey about a release date and platforms but it is likely that Shoot many Robots will be available on many 'downloadable platforms' at some point in 2011.
Double Fine is showing their new downloadable Xbox LIVE title 'Trenched' which is a tower defense game set in an alternate World War 1 universe where soldiers control giant mech like robots to fight against increasing waves of an alien threat. The game played very much like a third person mech game in which I had to destroy different enemy types and stop them from taking down my air field tower along with 2 other players. The final game will support 4 player coop and have a story mode with several different scenarios. I could not squeeze out a release date from the game's producer but it should be out in a couple of months. Trenched promises to be a lot of fun as players will work together to defeat the enemy waves while coordinating attacks with complimenting loadouts.

A game that I did not think I would enjoy is 'Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes' - but I did, a lot. The Ubisoft published game is the sequel to the DS title from a couple of years ago and translates very well to PSN and Xbox LIVE. After being walked through how to actually play the game, which evolves around moving certain units into straight lines and battle sequences, I found myself wanting to play this strategy / puzzle game for the rest of the afternoon. Of course, I had to make way to the next set of players eventually but I will keep this game on my radar as it releases next month.
After playing a few other games I got my hands on a Nintendo 3DS loaded with Resident Evil Mercenaries. First of all, the 3D effect works but I am not sure if Mercenaries was the best game to show it off. I needed to hold the screen at the perfect angle to get the actual 3D effect. The 3DS itself feels like a solid piece of hardware and controls well. I am certain that this console will be an absolute hit but I have yet to see a game that uses the 3D effect really well. I'd imaging a game like Boom Blox would work really well on the system. Mercenaries played well on the system and looked great also, I played through the survival mode which had me pinned against a ton of varied enemies. The object was to kill as many enemies as possible in the time allotted to me.
One of my favorite games though was EA's Shift 2: Unleashed. Slightly Mad had a both set up with 2 D Box hydraulic racing seats and 8 foot screens which made the game an amazing experience. Playing Shift 2 in a racing simulator in cockpit view on such a massive scale was one of the coolest things I have done so far at this year's PAX. The game itself plays a lot like Shift 1 but I certainly noticed the overhauled visuals, sound and handling. This game has some serious potential and I am looking to play more of it this weekend and in weeks to come when it releases later this spring.
There were plenty more games I don't have time to talk about right now as well as games I still need to play like Portal 2, Battlefield 3 and LA Noire. Check back often for updates and follow me on Twitter for some sneak peaks!
Indie games are a large and important component for PAX. This year is no different. The Boston Indie Showcase has honored three developers which will be showing off their games at in Boston next month.
This year's games are Blinding Silence, Smuggle Truck and Snapshot. The games will be playable at the convention and more details for each game can be found right here.

Every once in a while I like to write about something that is not a press release, news post or video game review. Today I'd like to take a quick look at the year ahead of us and why it may be the best one yet.
We have had plenty of great years in gaming and this clearly is the subjective opinion of one person, so take it with a grain of salt, but 2011 has the potential to become a year we look back on and say, damn that 2011 was the $#%@.
While we wont be getting a lot of new IP's delivered onto the systems we play and love, there are tons of sequels to be excited for. Dont believe me? I could name a few if you'd like.
To start of the year we will get Killzone 3, Bulletstorm and Crysis 2. Three shooters of great quality and distinct features. While the ISA is looking to escape planet Helghan and wrap up the trilogy, players can get excited for the Nano Suit 2.0 and an Alien invasion battle on a whole new scale. And, of course, there is Bulletstorm. One of the few new IP from People Can Fly and Epic. This game has some great potential, especially for those players who like killing for points... lots of them.
If you are not playing the insane amount of community levels Little Big Planet 2 brings to the table then you might want to think about the other upcoming releases and get your calender sorted out.
The spring period is just as loaded as every other season in 2011. Dragon Age II is closer than you may think. Are you ready to experience another massive story in a huge and deep universe? Whatever your answer may be, I can think of a few other games that you are looking forward to such as Homefront, the next big game from Chaos. This alternate time line future warfare game with giant multiplayer levels is one to keep an eye on.
The month of May alone is loaded with gaming goodness. Rockstar has another giant game this year in LA Noire. This open world detective based shooter/adventure game boasts some of the best facial animations we have ever seen in a video game. If 1940's police work is too subtle for you, then get ready for the Duke! Duke Nukem Forever is a thing and actually coming out. Gearbox will be finishing the game along with staff from the former developer in order to make this something of quality. A new IP from Splash Damage, Brink, will be coming out this month as well and is a very promising mix between Mirror's Edge and Team Fortress 2.
For the racing fans out there, DIRT 3 is the title to watch. Codemasters is putting the rally back into this classic series. After playing it recently I can promise, you wont be disappointed.
Lets jump into the fall and winter seasons. Most of these games wont need much introduction. Resistance 3, Insomniac's gritty and epic conclusion to a battle we have been fighting since 2006. Get ready for an even bigger, badder and more bad ass game to start off the holiday season. One of my most anticipated games for 2011 is id Software's RAGE, the post apocalyptic shooter which blew us all away when it was shown off at E3 last year.
Be warned, this is where it gets serious. Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are three games you will not want to miss and probably all of these games will make it onto every GOTY 2011 list at the end of this year. Commander Shepard, Nathan Drake and of course, your created character in Skyrim are three of the protagonists you'll have the most fun with this year.
I have already gone over plenty of games that will take gamers hours and hours to finish and fully experience but didn't even mention Portal 2, the Nintendo 3DS, Sony NGP (PSP2), InFamous 2, SOCOM 4, Battlefield 3, Forza 4, Batman Arkham City or Gears of War 3.
Please remember, this is a subjective list and nowhere close to complete or all encompassing, simply a jump start to point out how great 2011 will be for gamers everywhere.
What are some of the games you are looking forward to? What did I not mention and should have. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Every year since the console launched fans and industry folk alike, have been talking about 'The Year of the PS3'. Every year we see the lists go up and fanboys go mental over the 'Power of the PS3' and 'The Year of the PS3', well 2011 could actually be such a year.
Given that no more games get the boot or delayed to 2012, Sony has really lined up a strong library for the coming year which tempted me to create a list. Check out all the titles that are scheduled to hit the shelf in 2011.
I realize that I am excluding some anticipated downloadable games like Journey and Pixel Junk Shooter 2 but this list is for disc based PS3 exclusive titles only, therefor DC Universe Online is also missing.

Konami just kicked some more content for Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 our way. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions received some new DLC today which includes kits and boots. Just what we like, we like to be dressed on the pitch and not naked!
More free DLC will be released in 2011. We'll keep you posted.
The downloadable pack adds a number of new items to the game. Twelve kits have been updated within the game, including those of the Ireland national team and many French club teams. Similarly, ten new licensed boots styles from manufacturers such as Adidas, Puma, Umbro and Mizuno have been added.

Today Capcom announced that their latest motorcycle racer Moto GP 10/11 will be releasing in March 2011. Upon release, Moto GP will have 2010 season data only but an update shortly after the 2011 season starts will bring players up to speed.

Konami and soccer games go way back. The Japanese developer and publisher has been releasing games based on the world’s most popular sport since the mid 90s under many different names including ‘Winning Eleven’ and ‘International Superstar Soccer’ before settling on Pro Evolution Soccer or PES. This year Konami was looking to improve upon last year’s reboot and reach parity to its main competitor FIFA 11. While Konami’s PES has been regarded as superior in past years, FIFA has taken the top spot in the past two years. Will Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 reach its full potential or get caught off-sides?
PES and FIFA are both great soccer games with very different styles and feel. PES used to make up for its missing licenses with exceptional gameplay and action packed moments. With this year’s iteration, Konami has certainly reached their goal to achieve that and created a snappy and fun soccer experience. Even though it is lacking licenses such as the Bundesliga or Seria A the game feels authentic and most importantly, is fun to play. Pro Evolution received a reboot last year in order to compete with FIFA and fell short of being successful. It just didn’t quite reach its full potential. Pro Evo 2011 has managed to take what was good about its predecessor and built upon it.
As I have mentioned before, Pro Evo has a very different style and feel from its competition. PES has more direct and arcade feeling controls when it comes to passing, shooting and crossing. That is not a bad thing. Playing Pro Evolution is a ton of fun and filled with many action packed moments. Keeping the ball and working your way up to a scoring opportunity is very rewarding and usually has a surprising outcome. At times I felt like watching a real soccer game. Some of that can be attributed to the fact that PES 2011 looks great and has fantastic animations including player specific movements and stance for star players like Real Madrid’s Ronaldo or World Footballer of the Year Messi. The game runs extremely smooth and has you wanting to play the next game right after the final whistle. The fact that some teams, leagues and other licenses are missing or are incomplete is compensated, in part, how well presented the UEFA Champions League is. The Champions League is arguably one of the biggest and most prized competitions in world soccer. Pro Evo makes it feel that way.
Dribbling down the field with Ronaldo or distributing passes with Ozil are some of the moments that make Pro Evolution one of the best sports gaming experiences of the year. As noted before, player animations look and feel fantastic. Step-overs and drag moves work and look realistic, allowing for some great looking replays. As one can probably already tell from reading my review up to this point, I really like this game. In past years, I have been more of a simulation fan and preferred the FIFA series because of its licenses and massive player and teams lists but Pro Evolution 2011 has left a lasting effect on me.
PES’ menus and customization are simple, elegant and useful. There is not much clutter to navigation but Pro Evo offers lots of tactical customization and team setup which is then reflected on the pitch. In addition to Pro Evo’s signature competition and modes there are online Master Leagues and the Become a Legend mode which allows players to play as a single player very similar to the Be A Pro mode from the FIFA series. This mode has been adopted rather well and is accompanied by coaches’ commentary and half time speeches adding to the immersion in a good way. Another new feature allows for the setup of custom skill move strings which are mapped to the analog stick. While this is a cool looking animation when pulled off it can also look a bit awkward, I stuck with the regular skill moves and passing of the ball as it seemed like a better fit. In addition to the snappy passing system players can also use the freedom passing mode which allows for greater precision but is not required for a good time.Konami has tried to close the gap to the FIFA series this year and succeeded. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 has grown into a feature rich, visually pleasing and fun soccer game that is on par with FIFA 11. It is very hard to call a winner between the two but I can certainly recommend PES to anyone. Konami’s flagship title has returned to great form and I cannot wait to play more.
Score: 9 / 10
