This seems to be a recurring theme today with MotorStorm RC being free for a limited time and CCP's EVE Online shooter tie-in DUST 514 on the PS3 going Free-To-Play.

Previously Sony and CCP had plans to make DUST 514 cost 20 bucks which would be converted to in-game currency but today Sony revealed that the game will be fully free.

DUST 514 is going to be supported by micro-transactions and also receive a Vita 'companion app' which will sport character customization, shopping, and setting up "strategies" with other players, while interfacing with the PS3 game.
